St. Maarten – Chairman of the General Audit Chamber Roland Tuitt has welcomed the broad support in parliament for the establishment of a permanent committee on national expenditures. The committee was proposed by the Audit Chamber as a means to facilitate the flow of information between them and the legislature.
“This committee will not infringe on the other task to deal with the budget. It will deal with our reports, the election of members, the judicial audits and the performance audits,” Tuitt explained.
Asked why the Audit Chamber did not think parliament’s finance committee was the right body for the task he describes Tuitt said, “When you give too much tasks to one committee it is overwhelming. This same committee functions well in the Netherlands and if we can use international best practices it will only enhance our functioning.”
Should the broad support for the committee hold up in a public meeting of parliament the new committee will consist of all the faction leaders namely Frans Richardson, William Marlin, Patrick Illidge, Roy Marlin and Romain Laville.
