St. Maarten – The owner of the Border Bar, identified by the Public Prosecutor’s Office as I.P., remains in custody and will appear in front of the Judge of Instruction today, Chief Prosecutor mr. Hans Mos told this newspaper yesterday.
On Wednesday morning a team of thirty law enforcement officers raided the Border Bar in Oyster Pond based on information that the labor conditions in this adult entertainment club pointed towards human trafficking, and more specifically to the trade in women (vrouwenhandel).
The club was not closed down after the raid. Prosecutor Mos said that such a measure is up to the government administration. “Besides, it is better to first await the outcome of the investigation,” he said.
Asked how long this would take, Mos pointed out that officers confiscated quite some material during the raid. “Currently officers are hard at work sifting through it,” he said. “Within two or three weeks it must be clear what we are dealing with.”
The prosecutor said that the owner of the adult entertainment club is also a suspect in a second crime, but he declined to give specifics.
