St. Maarten – The suspect in the bomb threat at the American University in Cupecoy is a student at the AUC, press prosecutor Karola van Nie confirmed yesterday. The man was released last Friday after spending eight days behind bars. He remains a suspect and the investigation continues, Van Nie stated.
The student sent an email to the university on August 31, saying that there was a bomb at the complex in Cupecoy. Police received a call about the threat around 9 a.m.
The school evacuated staff and students – more than 250 people – and the police closed off the area.
Police officers of the arrest team searched the premises together with AUC security staff but they found nothing. Around 12.30 p.m. police gave the all clear sign and students and staff returned to their stations.
Two days afterwards, the police arrested the student who is now the lone suspect in this case. So far, no further details have been released about the suspect or about his motives.
