Body of former Lt. Governor’s son found floating in pond

GRONINGEN – Police in Groningen have confirmed finding the body of 24 year old St. Maartener Joaquim Jamal Richards. The body of the 24-year-old son of former Lt. Governor Franklyn Richards was first spotted by a hiker who alerted the police.

Richards has been missing since October 20 when he left home in a confused state. No one heard from him after that and his family was gravely concerned, especially since he needed to take medication regularly for an unstated condition. His father traveled to the Netherlands to assist in the search for his missing son.

According to reports the hiker who found Richards did not trust things when he spotted the body floating in the pond at Noorderplantsoen which is between the Ebbingestreet and the Grachtstreet. The hiker raised the alarm and the police sealed off the area, dredged the pond and called in the divers from the fire brigade to assist with recovering body.

Richards’ body has been moved to a morgue. Police remain uncertain about how the body ended up in the pond.

Dagblad van het Noorden, a newspaper in Groningen reports that the body was identified at eight thirty local time after being found at 2:45 p.m. The police are investigating.
