St. Maarten – Another type of fishing will take center stage when the St Maarten Sport Fishing Foundation organizes a fundraising ‘Bottom Fishing’ tournament next week Sunday, on September 23 in the water around Bobby’s Marina.

Unlike traditional rod fishing where the required bait is affixed to a hook at the end of the line, in ‘Bottom Fishing’, weights are attached to the end of the line and that weight enables the bait to the bottom of the water which helps to lure fish.

“The idea of having this type of fishing competition is to offer the opportunity for our local fishermen show off their skills. As fishing being one of our island’s pastimes,” said Mr. Hodge, the foundation’s president.

Registration for all participating fishing boats will be held on Saturday, September 22 between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the 12 meter Yacht Club at Bobby’s Marina. The registration fee per boat is $75.

The competition will take place on September 23 from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. Participants must be back at Bobby’s Marina by 3:30pm to weigh their catches. The teams are only allowed to catch yellowtails, hines, butterfish, snapper, grouper, grunts, poggies, old wives and any other species of fish that feeds off the bottom of the sea.

The competition will be judged on points per species basis of bottom fish. In addition to the various prizes up for grabs and bragging rights the winning team will be awarded a paid invitation to compete in the foundation’s 5th Annual Budget Marine Wahoo Fishing tournament on November 2, 3 and 4.

All proceeds raised will go towards the purchase of an upgrade for the foundation’s VHF radio system. For information call 586 26 05 or 586 71 49 or visit
