Be the Change awards three scholarships

St. Maarten – Be the Change Foundation presented last Friday awards to the winners of the first annual Erika Cannegieter-Smith Dream Big educational scholarship grant on the boardwalk in front of Blush Boutique/Gelateria Milano.

The foundation awarded Jerrisa Wayland $1,000 to fund the post graduate IB program she is attending at St. Dominic High School.

Josiah Arnold was awarded $500. He will be taking supplemental classes at St. Dominic to satisfy the requirements he needs to continue his educational career in engineering.

Fernando van der Kraats also won a $500 grant to help with his schooling. , He will be attending “Amsterdam Hogeschool voor de Kunsten”, a school for theatre arts in Holland. His mother Beverly Matthew accepted the award on his behalf, because the winner is currently in New York with the students of Art Saves Lives.

“Each of these students impressed us with their motivation and their dreams of making it big in their chosen fields,” the foundation stated in a press release. “We are pleased we can honor the memory of Erika Cannegieter-Smith and help worthy students pursue their educational goals.

Be the Change thanks all those who applied for this grant, and we congratulate the winners. We wish them much success in their future educational endeavors.
