Baseball Association honors veteran players

St. Maarten – In their continued efforts to recognize the stalwarts of the game, the St Maarten Baseball Association has singled out nine players that have represented the island in the past and contributed to the development of the sport.
This announcement was made during the start of the season that began yesterday at the John Cooper/Jose Lake Sr Ballpark. The players identified are Donald Cannegieter, Manfred Cannegieter, Samuel Jacobs, Franky Vanterpool, St Clair Vanterpool, Bernard Davis, Lee Halley and Claudius Halley.
After the parade of teams marching to the beat from the Generation New Status Band and some encouraging words by Elton Jones. The Governor of St Maarten, Dr Eugene Holiday, Minister of Education, Culture, Youth & Sports Silveria Jacobs and Minister of Health Dr Cornelius De Weever were invited to perform the traditional first pitch/first catch.
It was evident that all three officials were in their comfort zone when that time came, with Minister De Weever catching, Minister Jacobs batting and the pitching by Governor Holiday. After the official part of the opening ceremony, the two time defending champions, Mets faced the Blue Jays in the opening game of the season.
