Aura Webster Hanson: “I wish the king much strength”POSTED: 04/26/13 12:15 PM
FRENCH QUARTER -The Mother Theresa of St. Maarten Aura Mercedes “Sadie” Webster Hanson was decorated by Her Majesty Queen Beatrix as a Member in the Order of Orange Nassau in 2003 for her outstanding community service. She was born in Curacao 68 years ago and after she moved to St. Maarten she raised more than 168 children without the help of government, and she continues to do so. She now takes care of 19 children at her home but from time to time more children come in, bringing the number to 35. Regardless of what happens “they are never turned away,” she said.
Speaking of the inauguration of the new King William Alexander, Webster Hanson said: “I wish him well and much success. I know that because the people of the world are getting much more difficult to manage, I wish the king much strength at this time. We must remember that even though he has been groomed for the throne it may be still difficult when he takes full responsible.”
Webster Hanson says she will never forget when she received her royal decoration. “It is a great honor to be decorated by the queen as a Member in the Order of Orange Nassau.”
Even as she continues her work with the children, this royal honoree secretly hopes that she will be eligible for another Royal Decoration in the future.
After the death of her husband Clarence “Clabo” Webster ten years ago she is now being assisted by her sons, who ensure that she gets the necessary help to pick up the children from school and that they are fed each day. “I am now living on my pension that I get from the Dutch side.” Even though she helps all these children she gets no assistance from the French Government. In the case of an emergency with the children “I pay it myself,” she said.
