GREAT BAY – The Sint Maarten Seniors and Pensioners Association (SMSPA) will hold a meeting on Thursday at the Senior Citizens Recreational Center in Hope Estate ahead of World Elderly Abuse Awareness Day that is on the calendar for Sunday.

SMSPA-chairman Raymond Jessurun stated in a press release that his association will bring on the debate about elderly abuse with interviews on radio and TV this week.

Thursday’s meeting will focus on the old age pension, the 1,000 guilders minimum amount for these pensions and the political debate about it. The meeting will also address social welfare (onderstand) – currently 505 guilders per month – the poverty line and the social safety net.

Other issues are the high cost of living in St. Maarten, the relief local politicians have promised and the relief for senior citizens utilities company Gebe announced in March. Lastly, the meeting will address healthcare quality and discriminatory premiums for seniors at SZV.

The SMSPA asks churches to dedicate special attention to elderly abuse in the community on Sunday.
