GREAT BAY/MARIGOT- Minister of Culture, Education, Sports and Youth Affairs, Dr. Rhoda Arrindell issued a stirring call recently for the private sector to throw its support behind the international athletics meet being hosted by the Speedy Plus  Club from May 5 – May 9, 2012. The event will be held at the Alberic Richards Stadium in Marigot. The minister made the call on Wednesday at the Council of Ministers weekly press briefing, almost a week after she would have met with Collectivité President Alain Richardson.

“I am urging all the businesses to rally around the organizers to make this event one that we can all be proud of. Government is doing its part by making financial assistance available and an event of this international caliber requires that the private sector also chips in. The idea is that the event will be alternated between both halves of the island in the future,” the minister said.

The Speedy Plus Club has been hosting the event for the past six years which attracts world class athletes. Many of those coming to our shores will be competing in this year’s Summer Olympics.  They include Shawn Crawford and LaShauntea  Moore  (USA),  Andrew Hinds  (Barbados),  Gerald Phiri (Zambia), Ainsley Waugh (Jamaica), Remy Arnaud (Guadeloupe),  Kelly-Ann Baptiste (Trinidad) , Damola Osayomi and Blessing Okagbare (Nigeria).

The youth training camp will feature trainers and athletes from Cuba, Jamaica, Trinidad and Guadeloupe. The decision taken to have a combined team of St.Martin/St.Maarten and Martinique for the first time makes 2012 even more special, Dr. Arrindell said.
