St. Maarten – Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs, Dr. Rhoda Arrindell, , paid an unscheduled visit to the Marie Genevieve de Weever School in Hope Estate on Wednesday morning. The visit coincided with the first day of school for the students.
The school, which has been undergoing renovation and expansion works, re-opened for the new school year, two days after the rest of the schools on the island, to allow for the contractor to clean up the premises. The delayed reopening was due to the heavy rains the island had been experiencing.

Arrindell toured classrooms with Acting Principal Suwana Moeslikan. After the tour, which included an inspection of the grounds, Arrindell said she was satisfied that lessons could be given in the classrooms.
Dr. Arrindell also used the visit to meet class teachers, and briefly speak to the students. She exhorted the students to make this the best year ever, and their school the best it could be. She also praised the management and staff of the school for the efforts they put into ensuring that school could reopen Wednesday morning.
The Minister had visited the school on Saturday, August 13, prior to the opening of the new school year, to see the progress that was being made with the expansion project.
