Amazing how politicians time and again are pulling the wool over people’s eyesPOSTED: 08/6/15 6:54 PM
It is amazing how politicians time and again are pulling the wool over people’s eyes. The latest example is of course the situation with the Sint Maarten Tourism Authority. Announced with, indeed, a lot of fanfare by a minister who fled the island just nine days later after having achieved absolutely nothing (or it must be that he managed to keep the Border Bar brothel open after its owner was convicted for human trafficking), the STA is the same lame duck it was twenty odd years ago.
In the meantime, marketing destination St. Maarten is in a shambles. No wonder the island never shows up among the favorite destinations of global travelers.
Saying that we are at a critical crossroads is a well-worn cliché, but in this case we are. Other Caribbean destinations are marketing themselves silly and thinking that this will not affect St. Maarten is plain ignorant.
Our current minister of tourism is almost gone, given the upcoming cabinet shuffle, and he has done absolutely nothing to put the Friendly Island on the map. His successor, whoever it may be, will most likely land in the quagmire his predecessor Ted Richardson left behind.
When will the government wake up and smell the coffee?
