St. Maarten — All schools have received the all clear to reopen today following a week unplanned break to access and repair the damages sustained by hurricane Gonzalo last Monday.

The St. Maarten Vocational Training School, Martin Luther King Primary School, Genevieve De Weever and the Oranje School had on Friday not been included in the list of schools that were clear for reopening today. However, another assessment over the weekend indicated that these schools are also ready to be reopened. Parents and guardians of these schools are asked to note that school will be in session today.

In preparation for the resumption of classes, school boards have been advised by the division of student support services of Ministry ECYS of the strategies that should be employed in the first few day days of school to meet the needs of students who have been impacted by the storm.

In addition, a psychologist and social workers of the division will also be visiting the various schools to guide and provide additional support to the student care teams of the schools for as long as the need persists.

Minister of Education Patricia Lourens-Phillip congratulated all stakeholders for the positive, deliberate steps taken to ensure minimal interruption in the education of students as a result of the passing of the hurricane.  The minister further expressed her appreciation to the volunteers within the communities as well as the management teams, teachers and cleaners of schools that contributed tremendously towards the cleaning up of the school facilities which were in many instances significantly impacted by the hurricane.
