St. Maarten – The Court in First Instance sentenced Darrel Damian Saul to a 6-month conditional prison sentence and an 8,000 guilders fine for a failed attempt to smuggle 85.4 grams of cocaine aboard a plane on March 13.

Saul, 32, was arrested at the airport. Initially the prosecutor’s office offered the British national a conditional dismissal – the condition being that he pays a $3,250 fine. But the defendant did not do this.

“The guideline for these amounts is about 6 months imprisonment. We don’t always offer a conditional dismissal. We judge every case individually,” prosecutor mr. Dounia Benammar said.

Saul was not present in court because he has been deported. The prosecution does not expect to see him back on the island any time soon, reason for Benammar to demand a conditional prison sentence and a fine.

Judge mr. Monique Keppels sentenced Saul accordingly.
