St. Maarten – The second Annual Seven Seas Rotary-Rotaract Spelling Bee was buzzing with excitement at last Saturday’s semi-final round with ten students competing for a spot in the finals.
The finalists are Rashika Ramchandani and Disha Sharma both from Methodist Agogic Centre – B.F.M., Michael Leslie from Hillside Christian School, Shandon Fleming from Learning Unlimited, and Mark Mc Almont from Methodist Agogic Centre Rev. Gumbs Campus.
Just like the semi-final round, the 5 contestants will be taking turns to spell out 20 words each on stage. The top three scorers will receive prizes like a Macbook Pro, an Ipad and a 16 GB Ipod. There will be consolation prizes for the 4th and 5th place students, for their achievements in reaching the finals.
The winning school will receive a desktop computer with printer, and the most supported school will receive a multi-purpose printer.
The final is taking place this Saturday at the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) in Cupecoy starting at 9 a.m. Students are requested to be at AUC by 8:30am for registration. Elle si Belle NV is providing free transportation for Spelling Bee supporters with their large tour buses stationed at MPC in South Reward and the Government Administration parking lot in Philipsburg, departing at 7:45 a.m. On the way to AUC there will be stops at Fatum in Cul-de Sac, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Tropicana Casino in Cole Bay, and SOL gas station in Simpson Bay. After the event, the buses will transport passengers back to where they were collected. There will be snacks and drinks for all in attendance, and also additional prizes for spellers in the audience. Unlike last year, there are no regionals, but the Rotary and Rotaract Clubs are looking into hosting the regional finals in the coming years, where various neighboring islands can participate.
The Rotary-Mid Isle and Rotaract Sunrise Clubs thanked main sponsor Seven Seas Vitamins and their agents FOH Distributors, platinum sponsors Sol and Scotiabank, AUC and their staff, Rotarians and Rotaracters and their families, and the panelists from several other Rotary Clubs for their support.
