Prime Minister reiterates her U 2 Can Move message – Dozens join Pink Phit and Fabulous Walk

St. Maarten – The Pink Phit & Phabulous walk from Divico in Cole Bay to Mullet Bay early on Saturday morning was described as a success by Shelly Alphonso, the President of the Positive Foundation.

However, of the 700 specially designed tee shirts that were available for prospective participants only about 200 were distributed to the eager gathering that stood in line from as early as 5.00 a.m. The tee shirts ensured instant recognition of participants during the walk as supporters of breast cancer awareness.
As a direct result of the unavoidable late start, the organizers made the course shorter by cutting out the steep sections. After leaving Divico, the energetic participants proceeded straight to Mullet Bay, via the main road.

Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams was noticeably absent from the starting point, but when she joined the long line of walkers later , she stepped up the tempo and even her security detail had to take turns and endure her momentum.

In addition to the appetizing rewards at the end of the early morning stroll, Prime Minister Wescot-Williams took the opportunity to get her ‘U Too Can Move’ message across to the gathering after joining a large group for a rare photo opportunity.

“ Lets us give ourselves a round of applause,” she started out by saying. “This walk shows that you and I too can move. We are going to be doing some extra activities under the theme, you too can move,” she added.

The Prime Minister pointed out the importance of daily exercise especially for women to keep active even if it meant climbing a flight of stairs, walking or running. It was at that point that she extended an open invitation.

“This Saturday, we will meet at the St Dominic School and we will go up the Hills in South Reward where we will be doing some Zumba. That is a sight you don’t want to miss. Stay fit, keep moving, stay active and get checked,” she concluded.

Because of logistical problems, the Zumba workout that was scheduled to take place after all the participants had arrived in Mullet Bay did not take place. However for those who walked that distance for the first time, it was an experience they are not likely to forget. For the regulars it was just like a walk in the park and they all felt ‘phit and phabulous’.
