The solicitor-general demanded life imprisonment against two men who committed a string of murders, one rape and several violent robberies last year around the time of the Heineken Regatta.
Three weeks from now, the Common Court of Justice will either follow this demand or come to a different conclusion, but whatever happens, the two defendants will remain behind bars for a very long time.
That thought is only partially comforting, because the life sentences do nothing to bring the victims of their crimes back to their families and they do little to heal the wounds of others who came away alive from their confrontation with these two criminals.
That brings once more the question to the forefront what our country has to offer to the victims of violent crimes. If there is anything at all, it is surely flying under the radar.
