Editorial: Inappropriate
POSTED: 08/17/12 12:07 PMThe story about a 50-year-old man who allegedly maintained inappropriate contacts with an 11-year-old girl, and probably with a host of other very young children as well, will send chills up the spine of many a parent – and for good reason.
While the defendant in this case has not been convicted yet, the court case highlights a delicate subject that warrants the attention of everybody who is involved with the care for very young children – like parents, teachers, neighbors and family members.
Young children are defenseless against adults, certainly when the age difference is forty years. They trust adults because they expect protection from them. If that trust is violated, some lives will be ruined forever.
A decent community will not allow that to happen, but let’s not take anything for granted. Everybody has to remain alert, without falling in the classic witch hunt trap.
