St. Maarten – In an attempt to further introduce the youth of St. Maarten to the island’s unique underwater environment and also to the sport of scuba diving, the Nature Foundation and the Scuba Fun Dive shop certified five former snorkel club students as open water scuba divers. The five youngsters are Zakiya Peterson, Iris Hakkens, Dominique Hakkens, Isaiah Haakmat and Zaire Lake.
Nagico NV and Taliesin Construction sponsored the certification. David Botha of Scuba Fun was the certifying instructor for the course. The five students can now call themselves Open Water Divers and will continue with their dive education. They are also now able to assist the Nature Foundation with research diving within the Man of War Shoal Marine Park.
In a press release the Nature Foundation thanked Scuba Fun Dive Shop staff and management, Taliesin Construction, Nagico NV, and the parents of the students for making the project possible and for successfully spreading marine conservation and the sport of scuba diving to local youth.
