St. Maarten – Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams and Vice Prime Minister William Marlin, attended the rafter wetting ceremony at the St. Maarten Housing Development Foundation for its new affordable housing project called the Belvedere Villas.
The prime minister said that it was good to see the foundation launch yet another project for affordable homes. “This project is centered around building different categories of homes for especially young people, people who may want their own homes and who will now have an affordable option to realistically do so. Naturally it was very encouraging for government to be present and to be part of the rafter wetting.”
The rafter wetting itself was left up to Vice PM William Marlin who scaled a ladder during a downpour with a bottle of champagne to do the honors.
The Belvedere Villas project started in early June and the first of the villas reached its highest point on Friday. The housing foundation is funding the 4.3 million guilders ($2.4 million) project that consists of eighteen homes altogether. Prices vary from $120,000 to $180,000.
