Foundation launches DVD Living Statues FestivalPOSTED: 05/16/12 1:03 PM
St. Maarten – The Beyond Writing Foundation published its first documentary DVD about the Caribbean Living Statues Festival last week. The DVD-launch took place last Friday at the Philipsburg Community and Cultural Centre.
Tourist Office director May Ling Chun was chosen to be the Madrina (Godmother) of the documentary. She was pleased to do so. The DVD is the first of its kind; it portrays the ins and outs of how the Living Statues event came along, the workshops and the participation and exhibition of the living statues in Philipsburg.
The catwalk and price awarding ceremony at the Cirrus Wathey Square on December 18 of last year are also pictured. The documentary was made by Albert van der Gugten.
Beyond Writing Foundation President Loekie Morales is happy with the result. She envisions more diversification of the tourist product for Sint Maarten and sees the return of the Caribbean Living Statues as a yearly event as a serious possibility. “If we get sufficient support from the government, the private sector (especially in Front Street), the NGO’s and the community, for their voluntary work, we can let Philipsburg shine again this year in the first week of December. We will attract more people who are interested in this unique art form, the culture of the region and its history. It would be nice if Sint Maarten became the Caribbean center for this art form.”
Morales thanked all the sponsors and partners in the event with a copy of the DVD: The Tourist Office, The Prins Bernhard Cultural Fund, the Dutch Representative of Holland in Philipsburg, the Mondriaan Foundation, and the Motiance Dance school.
