Editorial: Why now?POSTED: 05/9/12 2:12 PM
One may well wonder why of all unsolved crimes in St. Maarten the investigation into the Eric Yuan Sam murder has been reopened.
We welcome the initiative; that is not the point. But the question why now remains unanswered for the time being. The crime was committed two years and more than four months ago.
We’d think that the murder of Haresh Dayalani was equally shocking, as were the execution style murder of David Eustace, the disappearance of American Leta Cordes in 2008, the disappearance of another American, Robert Brous, in 2010 and the rape and murder of Clemencia Julot in the summer of that same year.
These are just a few of the unsolved mysteries that have all rocked our island in their own way.
We’re curious to see whether reopening the investigation will trigger somebody’s memory (or somebody’s conscience). From the efforts that were made in the Clemencia Julot-case we have learned not to expect too much.
But let’s not get too pessimistic here: we do agree that the Eric Sam-murder ought to be solved, and we wholeheartedly support the call on people who know something – anything – to come forward. The number to call is 553 15 22.
