Power boat goes up in flames at seaPOSTED: 03/28/12 11:31 AM
St. Maarten / By Milton G Pieters - The main objective of the Coast Guard was to extinguish the flames that had engulfed, ‘The Urge’ but after hours of battling with the blaze, the decision was made to sink the vessel shortly after 11.00am yesterday. The Urge appears to be a power boat with registration number 5×1836 P-C.
The details of the unfolding scenario still remain a mystery. It could not be established if anyone was on board at the time of the initial fire, or who are the rightful owners.
The St. Maarten Sea Rescue Foundation, a navy vessel and three inflatable dinghies all got involved in the operation to extinguish the fire which had already caused extensive damage, but even with the abundance of water, the hard working Coast Guard were unable to extinguish the blaze. After all other efforts failed that they decided to sink the burning boat, a process which turned out to be a tedious task. To warn other ocean going vessels, a blue buoy was attached to the buoy of the boat which was still visible above the surface.
No official report has been issued on the matter and calls to the Coast Guard went unanswered.
