KPMG stresses importance of family businesses

St. Maarten – KPMG in the Dutch Caribbean and Suriname and KPMG Meijburg Caribbean recently hosted a seminar entitled “The business of Family business” at the Sonesta Great Bay Beach Resort & Casino. The session reinforced the fact that family businesses inspire entrepreneurial talent and was specifically for family business owners and other who are involved in them.

The most important topics on the theme “the business of family business” were discussed during the seminar. As special guest speaker Grant Walsh, Director and founder of the KPMG Centre for Family Business in Ottawa, Canada presented his experience and advice towards the St Maarten audience. For the past fifteen years, his professional services have been dedicated solely to assisting family businesses in working through their management and ownership issues with a focus on the transition process.

Wendell Meriaan, Tax Partner of KPMG Meijburg Caribbean, presented his view on local tax issues for family businesses and Ronald Pieters, Director of the KPMG St. Maarten office touched the topic from a strategic point of view where lots of attention towards cash flow planning was explained as adding value to business performance in the long run and also succession planning was discussed.
