St. Maarten Government takes tax out of Christmas bonusesPOSTED: 02/10/12 2:11 PM
St. Maarten – Civil servants who received their belated Christmas bonus were surprised to find out that the fls 345 payment had been taxed, Claire Elshot, first vice president of the windward Islands Chamber of Labor Unions Wiclu said yesterday morning.
“In the past it was never taxed,” Elshot said, “So civil servants expected to receive the full amount.”
Elshot said that the government should have informed the employees about the way the bonus was going to be paid. “There is a lack of information. The government has to do better on communication,” she said.
Elshot said that she had only received reactions about the bonus from active civil servants, not from pensioners.
Extra payments on top of regular salaries are taxed with a tariff of 12.5 percent.
