St. Maarten – The Windward Islands Bank softball team will be going into the 2012 season which began Sunday with a psychological advantage after securing three of the six awards in the male category for their performances in 2011.
In addition to the awards from the last season, the team picked up their first win in this year’s competition after defeating the Middle Region Stars by 15 to 9. In that encounter, Steven Constance, Raphael Rohan and Simon Pantophlet each scored home runs for the WIB team. Also scoring a home run was Nelcicio York, from the Middle Region Stars.
Picking up the most valuable player award for the Wib team was Rudy Baly while Simon Pantophlet emerged as the player with the most home runs and the most RBIs. The other awards in the category went to Nelcicio York from the Middle Region Stars (best batter) and Ruben Richardson, also from the Middle Region Stars, scored the award as the best pitcher.
In the female category, the Diamonds scored a double when Crecencia Brown won the home run and most RBI’s awards. Shama Flurton, from the Coco-Cola Steelers won the best pitcher award and ChrisAnn George, from the Nagico Jets was the best female batter for 2011.
In an effort to generate more interest in the sport off the field, the St. Maarten Softball Association implemented a policy in 2011 and the team that turned up for the parade at the Le Grand Marche first and the most decorated team received a prize for a weekend stay at a resort. This year, that prize went to the Diamonds and the Survivors.\
