St. Maarten – Next week Tuesday (March 22) is the St. Maarten National Day of Trees, and continuing with the four-year tradition, the archeological research center Simarc is organizing tree-plantings and educational events. This year the Simarc is assisted by the Pride Foundation, GEBE, the St. Maarten Tourist Bureau, and youth organizations like the St. Dominic Interact Club, and the Leo Club.
On Tuesday afternoon the Simarc will provide each community council with a large local tree (over 2-meter tall Locust trees ‘stinking toe’ have been selected) for planting at their community center facilities/or other selected locations in their community. Simarc students will plant these trees at the various community centers on the following Saturday, March 26. National Tree Day Posters and some Tree Day t-shirts will also be distributed for the communities.
The 2011 St. Maarten National Day of Trees event brings representatives from all community councils together at the Belvedere Community Center where they will receive their tree, and hear speeches by dignitaries including Prime Minister Sarah /Wescot-Williams. That evening, a special showing of the movie ‘Taking Root’ will be shown at the library in Philipsburg, at seven thirty.
After all the trees are planted, a final Tree Day summary press release will consist of a colorful photo-montage from all the Community Center tree-plantings, and the main event at Belvedere.
