St. Maarten – The Special Robbery Unit of the police force has solved 40 percent of the armed robberies that took place in January. There were 15 armed robberies in that month in different areas and so far the SRU has arrested six suspects.
The police have also seen a 30 percent increase in the number of house break-ins that they have solved. The creation of a Home Invasion Team is named as the reason for this success. The team has so far investigated robberies in Sucker Garden, Simpson Bay, Low Lands and St. Peters. They’ve arrested 10 suspects on suspicion of 16 break-ins. Police said it’s likely they’ve committed more robberies.
The arrests have led to people getting back items like jewelry and electronics.
“The investigations done by the Special Robbery Unit and Home Invasion Team will continue and many more arrests are expected within short,” Police Spokesman Inspector Ricardo Henson wrote in a statement.
