St. Maarten – The first race of the 2011-2012 sailing season keelboat races series will be sailed on Sunday in the coastal waters November 20 between Maho and Great Bay, with the starts in Simpson Bay. Last season’s winner in the racing class “Coors Light” with skipper Frits Bus and “Moondance” in cruising class with skipper Garth Steyn will be defending their titles over a total of 12 races. Several “offshore” races like the Course d’Alliance, Anguilla Regatta and Captain Oliver’s Regatta will be part of the series.
The opening competition will be several short around the buoys races at 10:00 a.m. This racing season the Youth Sailing Committee of the St. Maarten Yacht Club is encouraging keelboat skippers to take one or more of the more experienced sailors from the youth program along to give them a taste of keelboat racing.
“The St. Maarten Yacht Club encourages all sailboat owners to come out and join these races,” a release stated.
For more information on the keelboat races and possible crew positions please check the notice boards at the St. Maarten Yacht Club and at Chesterfields Restaurant, or check the St. Maarten Yacht Club website at www.smyc.com.
