St. Maarten – This year the 16thedition of the Regatta Art Competition takes place. Packages with the assignments have been handed out to all Dutch side schools, which means that the Regatta Art Competition has officially kicked off. This competition is open to all children between the ages of 4 – 18 years old and for those who haven’t received the assignments at school, they can be collected at both Van Dorp locations, the St. Maarten Yacht Club and Kids World.

The Regatta Art Competition has as main goal of creating awareness about the St. Maarten Regatta through art. Since the event has a big impact on the island and the local community, the organization feels that it is important to educate children not only about the sailing event and marine industry but also to make them feel proud of their country, and all it has to offer.

During the Regatta Art Competition children will have to complete assignments, which are divided per age group. Professional artists, like Roland Richardson, will judge the pieces of art after they have been handed in at the SMYC, or at both Van Dorp locations. The first, second and third place winner in each age category will be rewarded for their creativity. The organizers of the St. Maarten Regatta said yesterday that they are looking forward to seeing all those pieces of art coming in. “Seeing how children and teenagers express their creativity and imagination by means of art is amazing, also I am looking forward to see how they go about completing the assignments I came up with” says organizer Daphne van der Peijl.

“In past years there have been an increase in the number of participants and it will be exciting to see how many participants the Regatta Art Competition will have this year,” she added. Each year organizers add new, fun assignments to the package, challenging the children’s creativity. This year some of the assignments are: making a comic strip, building a wind chime, building a boat and taking a themed photograph. There are also freestyle assignments, to allow children to show off their artistic skills.

“If you would like to participate, or know someone else who would like to, but did not receive an assignment package, it is still possible to participate. Visit the SMYC, both Van Dorp locations, Kidsworld or the Carib Swim Team and ask them for an assignment package.”

The pieces of art must be handed in by Wednesday February 4th – 5 PM at the St. Maarten Yacht Club or at Van Dorp Simpson Bay/Madame Estate. The Prize ceremony is carded for Sunday February 15th – 14 PM sharp at the St. Maarten Yacht Club. “We are proud to announce that we can reward the children with great prizes, thanks to our loyal sponsors: Random Wind, Rhino Safari, Butterfly Farm, Aqua Mania, Tripsport, Roland Richardson, Van Dorp, Nature Foundation, Loterie Farm, Kidsworld, Funtopia, Shipwreck Shops, Divico.”
